Our Approach

To reduce the ski industry’s environmental impact and help ski industry businesses tackle their environmental footprint.

The ski industry produces huge amounts of carbon dioxide and vast amounts of waste.

Large sums of CO2 are created through travel, food, heating and construction, directly damaging the natural environment our sport relies on.

Businesses operating in the mountains create huge amounts of waste in the form of surplus food, plastic packaging and greenhouse gas emissions.

To offer a pathway that provides solutions to help the ski industry reduce its environmental impact.

Through a Green Pledge system, companies and individuals commit to changing the way they operate and live with a more sustainable future in mind.

To achieve this goal we are focusing on three key areas:

Greenhouse Gas Reduction

Plastic and Waste Reduction

Sustainability and Education

What is our goal?

To educate and encourage those we work with to consider their greenhouse gas emissions, by providing statistics and information to help them make more sustainable commitments.

That might be highlighting rail travel as a more environmentally and financially friendly alternative to flying, or finding the route to running our businesses on renewable energy.

Why is it important?

Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas production is responsible for the warming of the earth’s atmosphere. Skiing relies on cold winter temperatures, and as individuals and business owners who live for snow-filled days we need to protect our mountains and the wider environment. If global warming continues at current rates, skiing and the natural environments we love will soon become nothing but a distant memory.

How are we tackling it?

By analysing and understanding our carbon footprints we can find ways to cut our emissions. We look at food air miles, transport, renewable energy, wastage and recycling. This is a huge area where we are making thousands of small changes which are in turn leading to big gains.

What is our goal?

To create the first plastic-free businesses in the Alps. We’ll provide businesses with the solutions, accreditation and give them the platform to celebrate their achievement.

Why is it important?

We see the huge amounts of plastic waste created by our industry; plastic that will remain on the planet for many years to come. This waste makes its way into landfill or into our waterways, where it breaks down and pollutes our natural environment.

How are we tackling the problem?

We focus on the plastic packaging involved in the industry and strive to remove it from the day to day running of alpine businesses. We do this by switching to products that don’t have plastic packaging and putting pressure on the suppliers, demanding reductions in packaging and selecting brands accordingly. Ultimately, as a collective we have large purchasing power, and far more influence than the end consumer.

What is our goal?

To plant a million trees.

We’re doing this through various fundraising events and carbon off-setting programs. If you want to help us reach our target then you can plant a tree through our One Tree at a Time portal.

Why is it important?

Trees are perfect for sequestering carbon dioxide, each one locking away about 22kg of CO2 a year. Planting more trees is one of the most effective ways to reduce greenhouse gases, and a recent study has found that if we plant 1.2 trillion trees we could cancel out a decade of CO2 emissions.

By making our businesses as sustainable as possible and through the education of staff and customers we hope to reach large audiences. On top of this we’re planting thousands of trees to offset the areas of the businesses that are currently hard to change.

How are we tackling it?

We are planting in two locations: the first in the French Rhône-Alpes through our company portal at MyTree, and the second through Trees for the future, an organisation that plants trees for families in Africa. This gives communities the ability to transition from unsustainable farming techniques to a Forest Garden system, where tree planting not only sustains and empowers but also increases yield by 400%, changing lives forever.
